Help Preserve Idaho's Historic Rainbow Bridge
Idaho’s Rainbow Bridge has been a beloved landmark near Smiths Ferry for almost a century, but now it faces the challenge of keeping up with modern traffic demands. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is working on plans to replace the aging structure, but there’s a lot more to this story than just a new bridge…
Historical Significance of Rainbow Bridge
Built in 1933 as part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Rainbow Bridge is more than just a road; it symbolizes Idaho’s history and ingenuity. Designed by Charles A. Kyle, its unique open-spandrel structure is a feat of engineering that has stood the test of time.
The bridge represents the resilience of Idaho’s communities during the Great Depression, and its scenic beauty has made it an iconic part of the state’s landscape. But like many structures nearing their 100th birthday, it no longer meets modern standards for today’s traffic needs.
Replacement Plans
The ITD has proposed replacing the bridge to ensure the safety and reliability of Highway 55, one of the main north-south routes in Idaho. This plan has an estimated price tag of over $54 million, and while it’s necessary for safety, it’s not without concerns. Traffic disruptions, environmental impact, and the financial burden on taxpayers are all issues that have come up as the state works to address the growing traffic on this busy road.
To move forward with the project, ITD is conducting tests to design the new bridge’s foundation and structure. Crews are sampling soil and rock in the area, which involves removing trees and vegetation. They’re also working to restore the natural landscape once the testing finishes.
If you’re planning to drive on Highway 55 anytime soon, expect some delays of up to 15 minutes on weekdays during testing. Work will pause from noon on Fridays through Monday mornings to minimize disruption. This testing is a crucial first step, and construction on the new bridge should begin in 2027 or 2028, giving plenty of time for feedback and planning.
Preserve History While Embracing the Future
The Rainbow Bridge holds a special place in Idaho’s history, but ensuring it can meet the needs of modern drivers is a priority. As the project progresses, there’s an opportunity to preserve the integrity of the original bridge while improving safety and functionality for years to come. Enhancing alternate routes could also help ease congestion on Highway 55.
At Pathways Forward Idaho, we believe in preserving our state’s heritage while pushing for necessary improvements. The Rainbow Bridge project is just one example of how we can honor the past while building a safer, more efficient future.
Your Input Matters
One of the best parts of this process is the ITD’s commitment to involving the community. Public input will play a significant role in how the project moves forward, and ITD has been transparent about wanting to preserve the history and beauty of the area while ensuring safer travel.
Dan Gorley, a resident engineer with ITD, shared, “We intend to approach this project with a high level of transparency, sensitivity, and community involvement. Public input will be a key consideration in the final recommendation for the new and existing bridges.”
As a community, it’s essential to make our voices heard. If you have concerns or ideas, now is the time to get involved in shaping the future of this iconic landmark.
Get Involved
Public involvement is critical in shaping the outcome of this project. You can stay informed, share your thoughts, and contribute to creating a mutually beneficial solution. The ITD is encouraging feedback from Idahoans, and now’s the perfect time to voice your opinions and ideas.
By working together, we can preserve the Rainbow Bridge’s legacy while ensuring a safe and reliable path forward for future generations. Let’s honor Idaho’s history and seek a brighter, more connected future.
