our most-asked questions

While it’s true that inconsiderate drivers can contribute to traffic issues, the increasing population and development in Idaho, particularly in the Treasure Valley, have put a strain on existing infrastructure. The need for alternative routes is not solely about addressing driver behavior but also about accommodating the growing number of vehicles and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our transportation network.

At Pathways Forward Idaho, our goal is not to merely shift traffic from one highway to another, but to advocate for sustainable, long-term improvements to the entire transportation network. We are focused on enhancing safety and efficiency on all north-south routes, not just Highways 55 and 95. This includes the development and improvement of alternative routes, addressing issues such as passing lanes, straightening dangerous curves, and adding slow vehicle pull outs across various roads. Ensuring safer passage for locals and visitors is a continuous effort that extends beyond any single route, improving overall travel throughout Idaho.

At Pathways Forward Idaho, wildlife conservation is a top priority. We are committed to incorporating wildlife corridors into new road construction projects to help protect natural habitats and ensure safe migration and grazing patterns. By working closely with experts, the goal is to minimize the impact on the environment while enhancing Idaho’s transportation infrastructure.

One promising option that’s been proposed is the construction of a new highway in the foothills to the east of Indian Valley. This route would primarily utilize state and federal lands, minimizing the need for private property acquisition. Pathways Forward Idaho is committed to advocating for our community and identifying viable transportation solutions that will alleviate the strain on our current infrastructure.

At Pathways Forward Idaho, we understand the importance of maintaining Idaho’s rural character while addressing the growing need for infrastructure improvements. Our vision is a future where interconnected communities thrive through safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems. We believe that investing in these improvements will not only stimulate economic growth and enhance quality of life, but also help preserve our natural environment. The alarming increase in accidents, particularly fatal ones, highlights the urgent need for continued highway improvements and the exploration of alternative routes through central Idaho.

While it’s true that natural occurrences like rock slides and downed trees are common in mountainous regions, alternative routes can provide a safer and more reliable transportation option. By diverting traffic away from areas prone to these hazards, we can reduce the risk of delays and accidents. Imagine the convenience of being able to bypass these obstacles rather than being stuck in traffic for hours. Having the flexibility to reroute traffic onto highways that pass through more favorable terrain can significantly improve safety and efficiency.

We believe that the creation of alternative routes would actually benefit local businesses. While construction of new roads may temporarily impact businesses along Highway 55, the long-term benefits are significant. Once completed, these alternative routes would alleviate congestion on Highway 55, allowing it to better serve its original purpose as a scenic bypass. This would attract more tourists and enhance the overall experience for visitors. Additionally, the construction of new roads would create jobs and stimulate economic activity in the region. Our initiative aims to improve the quality of life for locals by restoring our communities and diverting through-traffic, OTD haulers, and other unnecessary traffic onto more suitable routes.

While it’s important for drivers to practice safe driving habits, the increasing traffic on Highway 55 necessitates additional measures to ensure safety and efficiency. Alternative routes can provide a viable solution without imposing additional tax burdens on Idaho residents.

One promising funding option for these projects is GARVEE bonds. These bonds are essentially municipal bonds backed by future federal highway reimbursements. This means the government can borrow funds upfront to finance transportation projects, with the expectation of repaying the loans using federal funds received over time. While interest on these bonds must be paid, the federal government often reimburses a portion or all of it, reducing the overall financial burden on the state or local entity issuing the bonds.
