What You Need to Know About the Highway 55 Road Widening Project
If you’ve ever driven the narrow, winding stretch of Idaho 55 near Smiths Ferry, you know how nerve-wracking it can be. This road has been a safety concern for years, and now, a major project is underway to widen it and make it safer for everyone. The project was scheduled to finish by the end of 2022 but is now expected to wrap up in the spring. Here’s an overview of what’s happening, why it’s important, and what it means for Idaho drivers.
Why Highway 55 Needed an Upgrade
Highway 55 is one of the critical routes connecting northern and southern Idaho, but the section near Smiths Ferry has always been risky. This road has been a long-standing safety concern because of its sharp curves, lack of guardrails, and proximity to the river and mountainside. Between 2017 and 2022, there were 36 crashes in this area. That gives the road a crash rate of 66.8 per 100 million miles traveled for incidents involving fatalities or serious injuries.
The Road Widening Project
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has been working to widen this treacherous stretch of road to improve safety. The project includes:
- Adding guardrails
- Widening shoulders
- Straightening areas to lessen winding
It’s a multi-year effort to lower the risk of accidents and make travel easier for drivers.
Federal Support and Funding
Federal funding was crucial in making this project happen. Idaho’s representatives, including Senators Larry Craig, Dirk Kempthorne, Mike Crapo, and Congresswoman Helen Chenoweth-Hage, helped secure the financial support needed to get the project off the ground. In total, $4.4 million in federal earmarks was allocated in 1998, with an additional $2.3 million secured in 2005 (adjusted for inflation). These funds helped kickstart the early phases of the project, but continued support is essential.
Senator Mike Crapo has strongly advocated for funding transportation improvements across Idaho. His office emphasized that projects like this are vital for improving road safety and ensuring the responsible use of federal funds.
What’s Next for Highway 55?
Once completed, drivers can look forward to a much safer experience on this previously dangerous stretch of road. ITD is committed to addressing long-standing safety issues, and the work on Highway 55 is a prime example of those efforts
This project is a much-needed improvement for driver safety, and we’re excited to see the final result. For those who travel this route often, completing the project will mean fewer hazards and a more enjoyable drive.
Whether commuting or heading to a scenic destination, pay attention and stay safe while driving on Highway 55.
